Frequently Asked Questions

Installing solar panels is an excellent way to save money and reduce carbon emissions, whether for your home, farm, or business. Solar panels let you generate your own energy instead of relying on costly, traditional sources of power. Micro-generators receive credits on their utility bill for the excess energy produced by solar that is distributed back into the electrical grid.

When designed and installed properly, payments for your solar system can be more affordable than paying for power from the grid, and with the system’s long lifetime, you will save even more.

Solar panels capture sunlight using photovoltaic (PV) cells, which convert it into direct current (DC) electricity. This DC electricity is then sent to an inverter, which changes it into alternating current (AC) electricity, the type used to power your home or business. Any extra energy can be stored or sent back to the grid for credit.

Your solar system can save you up to 100% on your monthly electricity bill. The amount you save depends on your system size and energy usage. Your utility provider will install a bi-directional meter (if not already in place) to monitor your energy production and consumption, crediting you for any excess energy you generate.
The average system costs between $15,000-$20,000 with an average payback period of 7-10 years.

The installation process itself can be completed as quickly as one day!

Once you contact us, one of our experienced team members will reach out within 24-48 hours, and you could be generating clean, renewable energy in as little as 2 months! Home installations usually take 1 to 3 days, with most projects wrapped up in one or two. The permitting process takes the longest, and it can take a few weeks depending on local regulations.

After your system is installed, we will invite you to a turnover meeting to make sure you are confident in managing your new system. During this meeting, we’ll give you a customized Turnover Package with all the details about your system, warranties, and material specs. We will also walk you through the monitoring platform so you can track your system’s performance.

Additionally, Ramco Renewables has an experienced service and maintenance team ready to assist with any questions or support you may need regarding your new solar system.

No, you do not need to be tied to the grid to install solar panels, but grid-tied systems are the most common. A grid-tied system simply connects your solar panels to the local electrical grid, allowing you to sell excess energy back to your utility provider. This option is more cost-effective as it lets you earn money and offset the cost of your solar panels.

Off-grid systems are becoming a popular choice for those without easy access to the grid or those wanting to avoid relying on carbon-intensive power. These systems store energy in a battery bank instead of sending it back to the grid. Off-grid installations are more costly due to the extra components and labor involved but may be the best option for remote areas or if grid connection fees are high.

In Alberta, snow can reduce your solar system’s production if it covers the panels and blocks UV rays. However, the tilt angle of the panels can prevent significant snow buildup if greater than 20 degrees. Solar modules operate more efficiently in colder temperatures which helps to offset any production losses from snow coverage during those colder months.

As for other weather conditions, such as hail. There is little to no concern. All modules installed by Ramco Renewables are hail tested by the manufacturer. The modules are rigorously tested by the manufacturer to withstand golf ball sized hail at 100 km/h.

Energy generation and payback are based on annual output, with the majority of energy produced during the warmer months (spring, summer, and fall). All climate considerations are factored into your design, so snow or weather won’t affect your solar system’s estimated annual production. We don’t recommend the risk or hassle of clearing snow from your roof—your system will perform as expected.

Good News! As of January 2025, the Canada Greener Homes Loan Program has been topped up with an additional $600,000,000 of funding!

Canada’s Greener Homes Loan is a government-backed initiative that helps homeowners make energy-efficient upgrades, including solar panel installations. This loan offers interest-free financing of up to $40,000 for eligible homeowners, making it easier to invest in renewable energy solutions. The loan can cover the full cost of your solar system, and the repayments are spread over 10 years, helping you save on energy costs while contributing to a greener future.

All systems installed by Ramco Renewables come standard with a 5-year workmanship warranty, ensuring the quality and reliability of our work. Additionally, all supporting components of your system are covered by their respective manufacturer’s warranties. These warranties vary depending on the specific products. Inverter warranties range from 10-25 years and Tier 1 solar modules 15-30 years.

Absolutely! During the turnover meeting, we’ll show you how to use the monitoring platform for your system. This allows you to track your energy production and system performance in real-time, giving you complete control and transparency.

The best way to find out is to reach out to us! Generally, solar panels work well on roofs that face south, east, or west.

If your roof has shade from trees, chimneys, or other obstacles, don’t worry—we can adjust the layout of the system to make sure it’s optimized for your specific situation.

As an experienced solar contractor, Ramco Renewables will assess all the details of your property to ensure you get the most efficient solar design possible.

During a power outage, your solar system will automatically shut down, including the inverter(s). This safety feature ensures that your system does not send power back into the grid while maintenance crews are working.

A common way to avoid a experiencing a power outage is to pair your solar system with a battery. When paired with a battery, you can customize your property’s back up needs and rest easy knowing that your solar system will continue to produce power in the event of an outage.
